What's the difference between 304 (A2) and 316 (A4) stainless steel?304 is standard grade stainless steel, 316 is marine grade. If you are within 1km of the coast you should consider using marine grade 316. For general outdoor applications not affected by salt or other highly corrosive environments, 304 would generally be appropriate. 304 or A2 stainless steel is STANDARD GRADE and typically comprises 17-20% chromium and 8-13% nickel and products manufactured from this material show excellent resistance to corrosion in all but the harshest environments. 316 grade stainless steel, also known as MARINE or A4 grade, comprises 16-18.5% chromium and 10-14% nickel but also includes 2-3% of the element Molybdenum, which provides increased resistance to chloride corrosion (e.g. corrosion in salt water environments). 316 is commonly used on boats, and in any coastal environment where the item may come into regular contact with salt water, spray or mist. Please contact us if you're unsure as to which grade of stainless steel you require. |
